Polished fossil Orthoceras section 450+ million years old (Ordovician period). Orthoceras are the fossilised stone remains of prehistoric marine life that existed in ancient seas between the Ordovician and Devonian periods. These marine dwellers, now extinct, were members of the cephalopod class, making them ancestors of present-day squid, octopus, nautilus and cuttlefish. They disappeared along with the dinosaurs approximately 65 million years ago. Orthoceras, meaning "straight horn", refers to a particular fossil genus of European and North African nautiloid cephalopods between 470 to 360 million years ago. Fossilized orthoceras are recognized by their elongated rocket or spaceship-like cylindrical spear shapes. Varying in size from a few centimeters to more than nine feet long, orthoceras are similar to the modern chambered nautilus, but grew a straight shell rather than a coiled one. They were among the most advanced of the invertebrates, having eyes, jaws, and a sophisticated nervous system. Orthoceras swam freely using a jet propulsion system of squirting water from their bodies, and had tentacles and ink sacs much like squid. They lived lives that lasted from one to six years, with the majority living two to four years. They fed on plankton (tiny free-floating organisms), sea lilies and smaller orthoceras. Although many fed off the ocean floor, others may have caught plankton while floating or swimming via jet propulsion, expelling water through a funnel-like opening to propel themselves in the opposite direction. As orthoceras died, their shells accumulated in great numbers on the sea floor where they were aligned by currents, buried by sediments, and transformed over the ages into stone by various natural physical and chemical processes. Orthoceras lived exclusively in marine environments and their fossilized presence in stone indicates the location of prehistoric seas. Approx. size 9cm x 4.5cm
